United Nations

Eight girls from the Middle School class went on the yearly United Nations trip and the leader of the peace committee, Mrs. Golden, was part of it too.

There were two purposes to the United Nations trip: one was to see the culture of New York. For that reason, they were allowed to go to museums like the Statue of Liberty and the Helium walking tour. They also went to the play Memphis , Ground Zero, and many more. The second side of this trip was to expose the students of the NGO, the Non Government Organization, who support the United Nations(UN). They talked to the land mine association, know as the UCF. At the UN they went on a tour and met the ambassador of Ghana. They also met other students from other Montessori schools that have worked on fundraisers and projects for helping Earth. One school helped build a classroom in Tanzania, Africa.

One student who went, Kee-kee, said “We had to go to meetings and we learned about the Earth and how to help kids from around the world.” Once or twice in the week they went to some meetings. For example, some were about helping our planet, how not to waste it and how to make it a better place. Also other meetings were held about human rights, economic development and peace.

Something that Kee-kee and Mrs.Golden learned about was the Shom Burg Library vs. the Board of Education anniversary. They passed three cases out. “I learned about the NGOs, financing and the 360,” said Kee-kee.

You are probably wondering what the 360 and the Millenium is. To start off, the 360 is a movement to help bring attention to global warming. The Millennium is a list of goals that the UN wants to achieve. For example, the ways we can change the lives every human being on this healthy planet.

Like any person would, I asked them, “What did you enjoy the most?” and Mrs. Golden said “I enjoyed when we went to the embassy of Ghana and learned about that country,” and Kee-kee said, “ I enjoyed going to the meetings and learning about our planet Earth.”
